An Interview with LEE OLDS
Q: You sold 1/4 million copies of Too Much Sun in the 60s What was it like =
being a best-selling author? What happened after that?
LO. What was it like being a 'best-selling' author? Nothing really. I=92d j=
ust gotten something out there. it enabled me to engage some interesting pe=
ople in Manhattan on a different level=2C but the publicity wasn't that gre=
at since Vanguard Press=2C the hardcover publisher promoted it little=2C an=
d despite rave reviews bookstores didn't sell (or stock) many. The mass sal=
es took place in worldwide supermarkets or chain stores of the paperback Ba=
ntam edition where people could pick the book up=2C read a few pages and ei=
ther buy it or not.
After that no general trade house would publish my many submissions. Their =
invariable answer was 'though I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book I=92d =
never publish it'.
Q: Too Much Sun is a coming of age story=2C does it mirror your own life?
LO: All first novels are pretty much bound to mirror one's life. It certain=
ly helped develop my philosophy of it.
Q: What prompted you to work with Not So Noble=2C the upstart digital publi=
shers who are releasing three of your novels? =20
LO: =91Not So Noble' caters to the arcane which my novels are=2C though how=
 other trade house publishers have not picked up on this I can't say. Ameri=
cans=2C of course=2C don't write philosophical novels. Might that be the re=
ason they don't publish them? They=92re too interested in perpetrating the =
great American myth=2C i.e. a country beyond analysis or quantification.
Q: You live in California=2C I imagine you as a 'Henry Miller in Big Sur' t=
ype figure=2C how far off am I?
LO:  Of course=2C have been exposed to all the scenes=2C jazz=2C  peace mov=
ement=2C rock movement=2C so-called spiritual quest in Big Sur and the Haig=
ht Ashbury=2C sometimes as an integral part of  but mostly behind them as m=
y curiosity works in philosophical=2C strange=2C almost voyeuristic ways. T=
hey=92re certainly a valid part of me=2C as valid as any other. I want to s=
ee whether they have any long lasting edifying effects for what one might c=
all a better society. Or were they merely a gratuitous=2C hedonistic fad fo=
r capitalism to feed on and make the claim it has artists=2C more PR B.S.
Q: How has your writing style changed over the years?
LO: My writing style has changed over the years by becoming more didactical=
ly focused=2C more cooperation=2C less competition more socialism and athei=
sm=2C less capitalism and religion two latter ideals which I believe as did=
 the late Hitchens and Dawkins are bringing the world to an unpleasant clos=
e. Man has to confront man. Sublimations won't do it.
Q: Do you read much fiction=2C if so what=2C who are your favourite authors=
 and why=2C and how has your reading changed since when you wrote Too Much =
Sun?
Who do I read? Tolstoy=2C Hamsun=2C Gide=2C Celine=2C Traven=2C Lowry=2C Co=
nrad=2C Pushkin=2C Dostoevsky=2C etc. etc. VS Naipaul=2C Neruda=2C Borges=
=2C Marquez=2C Rulfo=2C Lillo=2C Hesse=2C Mann=2C Broch=2C Musil=2C Mishima=
=2C Ooka=2C Forester=2C Mistry=2C and many others with whom I can identify =
with and/or learn from. I don't read American writers much. James=2C Crane=
=2C Wharton and of course Lovecraft and Poe are among my favorites. The big=
 four=2C Hemingway=2C Steinbeck=2C Faulkner and Fitzgerald I can do without=
 though some of Faulkner and Fitzgerald provides interesting psychological =
insights. As to Pynchon=2C De Lillo=2C Franzen=2C Bellow=2C Vollman et al=
=2C forget it. As de Beauvoir said=2C but what about people. Where=2C I won=
der=2C is the 'big picture' in America? It=92s an interesting country. It m=
ust be somewhere. I=92m still looking. I must say I don't consider myself w=
ell read. Foreign films are the same. You go to them to find life=3B not to=
 Hollywood the bed of sensationalism and cheap entertainment.
Q: What next for Lee Olds?
LO:  Right now I=92m reworking various versions of my past novels that I st=
ill hope to have published. I feel they'll better express my philosophy=2C =
i.e.=2C no god=2C no free will=2C no nothingness. Happenstance and disposit=
ion as in evolution rule. In my foreshortening=2C the style itself suggests=
 the perhaps uncomfortable=2C claustrophobic philosophy as well as a closer=
 look=2C I believe=2C as to how things in actuality causally transpire. If =
we adapt to what I consider to be that more scientifically valid dictum and=
 everything else goes well for us it just might lead to a more peaceful coe=
xistence of species.
