Modern British Sculpture=2C Royal Academy London

Good title. Weird how Jeff Koons and Urs Fischer et al are in this British =
Scultpure show. Guess it's some kind of clever shit. Sculpture is something=
you trip over=2C ha ha=2C the best thing here is Damien Hirst Barbecue mag=
goty fly vitrine=2C a great piece=2C makes you think of life and death and =
Britishness=2C like he wants you to. Epstein's Adam is good too=2C looking =
upwards like I have never seen a sculpture do. The rest is stuff you are to=
ld by the guard not to step over the line. It's school of eclectic curating=
. Lutyens war memorial=2C and an easter island figure (british sure) next t=
o some guy you'd forgotten from the 1970s. Kind of irritating as you have s=
een it all before=2C and we all know shit influences shit but come on....

Re: George Condo
by CAP =BB Fri Jan 28=2C 2011 2:33 pm=20
George Condo - Mental States: it seems like a New Museum-scale show. It rem=
ains to be seen how much of the Hayward they lavish upon it.=20
But Condo=92s always been an insider =96 blue chip Euro galleries like Bisc=
hofberger taking him up in a package along with chums like Schnabel. WTF? W=
ell George is of that vintage. He gets labelled an East Village artist thes=
e days=2C from the East Village phase in the early 80s. Which was a kind of=
punky=2C DIY thing=2C or late and limp Neo-Ex=2C for Euro viewers. But Con=
do=2C me-finds=2C neither fish nor fowl. As a Neo-Exer he was always a bit =
tame and tasteful =96 all that Miro-esque arabesque when he was meant to be=
slashing and burning. Mulheimer Freiheit only gave him a frei-height. He w=
as like a graphic designer re-doing Basquiat for lifestyle magazines=2C and=
keeping it cool=2C elegant =96 the =91all-over=92 look. And Jean-Michel wa=
s not aiming high enough=2C anyway.=20
Still=2C George of the Condo connected where it matters=2C not upfront. Lat=
er he moved on to the Picasso Meets Don Martin (legendary MAD magazine cart=
oonist) riffs=2C but again=2C this some time after Currin had done the full=
-blown MAD magazine cover as Old Master parody. Boy did that one get old qu=
ick. And George never quite had the licks to push it as far as Currin. His =
facture remains a comfortable inheritance from Picasso=2C but lacking the a=
mbition or drive. Is this what you mean by not-quite-great=2C JJ? Anyway Co=
ndo seems to have stuck with it for twenty years or so now=2C so a public g=
allery survey probably overdue=2C but hardly a thrilling prospect.
I don=92t know about the salon-style cluster hang either =96 I guess there=
=92s safety in numbers and it saves space that would drown this stuff other=
wise. But reading the Holland Cotter review in the NYT =96 and he loves thi=
s show =96 irreverence! It=92s SO Amerikan! =96 I was also puzzled by the r=
emark =93His version of abstraction bears the same relationship to the trad=
itional nonobjective thing as his portraits do to conventional portraiture.=
It=92s different=2C but if it=92s interesting=2C who cares?" Huh? So=2C sh=
ould we not care? Or should it not be different or interesting? I know Cott=
er won a Pulitzer recently=2C but I=92m not convinced it was for his writin=
g.

John Stezaker at the whitechapel gallery
by art reviews =BB Sat Feb 05=2C 2011 6:27 pm=20
The stez's career is schizo. He's gone from being well loved moustached roy=
al college tutor in humanities to wildly sucessful international superstar =
artist. Huh? Hope for all us losers=2C I guess. I remembered feeling slight=
ly bored by his collages=2C but thought I should take another look now he h=
as been widely proclaimed a cut and paste (fold) genius. Yeh. They look goo=
d=2C make nice decoration for rich people=2C but they all rely on exactly t=
he same device=2C seen one or two=2C seen em all=2C joins two images=2C and=
he makes a line from photo=2C say the edge of a leg=2C joins up with a lin=
e in the other photo=2C and you get a weird surreal effect. Either that he =
takes a square and puts that in another photo. Ok=2C simplicity is genius=
=2C and for example=2C a kebab roll has a certain sort of genius=2C but I d=
on't really want to eat it all the time=2C but a whole whitechapel full of =
stezs is meant to get us going.
Upstairs as though to further make us hate art=2C or appreciate the monoton=
y downstairs=2C we have a raised floor by the world's most pointless artist=
Bethan Huws=2C and some string by twee RIchard Wentworth=2C to complete th=
e feeling that art really is a waste of time is Mona Hatoum's lightbulbs in=
mesh=2C a cartoon of installation art. Anyone got an idea of what to do no=
w with this thing called art? =
