Jasper Joffe=20
Simeon Banner

Standing in the studio of artists Jasper Joffe and Simeon Banner you find y=
ourself in the company of Royals=2C murderers=2C suspender clad women=2C wi=
spy branches of tender willows=2C and some yet to be avenged=2C large abstr=
act canvases. An image fest of subjects and styles=2C competing characters =
and unlikely still lifes.

"No one tells us what to do" is the slogan of the contemporary artist who i=
s valued for=2C and values their independence above most other things. Of c=
ourse=2C art schools=2C gallerists=2C the market=2C the artist's bank balan=
ce=2C do exert pressure on the direction of the artist. But even then the a=
rtist maintains their credibility by appearing headstrong and motivated onl=
y by their individual vision.

For this show Harriet Murray and Neil Taylor of Campbell Works will select =
and hang any work they choose in any way they like from the studio of Joffe=
and Banner. Like an old fashioned gallery owner=2C think Peggy Guggenheim =
perhaps=2C they will be the ones who decide which paintings are any good=2C=
worth hanging=2C and have what it takes to hang in the glare of history.

For Joffe and Banner this will allow a fresh editing of their work=2C and a=
chance to be told what to do for once. Being free can get boring=2C it's a=
lmost the same as no-one caring. For Murray and Taylor=2C artists themselve=
s=2C "No one tells us what to do" extends their research into the dynamics =
and power relations that exhibition frameworks instill and gives them compl=
ete freedom in presenting other people's art=2C creating a collaboration wh=
ere giving up control shows confidence in the judgement of others=2C or at =
least hope that a fresh look might be worth a try.=20

=93No One Tells Us What To Do=94 will be a unique opportunity to view rarel=
y and never before shown work by Joffe and Banner. All works will be availa=
ble for sale.
