Frank Auerbach and Rembrandt's women at The Royal Academy London UK

Kaptain Krusty and his shit paintings! Next to boring old fat Rembrandt.

Makes you want to hang yourself! When you walk in you're surprised by the
really thick ones, but as you see more and more, you settle back into
loathing FA, people don't sit for him, they sit "to" the prententious
stirrer of pig-mint, so many Primrose Hills none of which look anything like
it. All his drawings, and 300 sittings, and diagonals, and seriousness, for
what? To make us sad and bored and hate painting. This is why BritART was so
bad before YBA. The only good Rembrandts are the sexy ones, which are only
slightly ruined by the sexist labels explaining them.

Tony Blair's speech to the Labour Conference UK

The first third was surprisingly full of ideas and complete sentences. He
indicated we must save Africa and the Environment, don't know about South
America and Eastern Europe probably not part of our sphere of influence.
Also we should join the Euro to combat terrorism and shock the money
markets.

Latterly, with many missing verbs, he had to focus on Britain which was
rather boring because noone really knows how to make schools and hospitals
much better. Finally he said America was pretty good and we didn't have a
black foreign secretary so who are we to talk, though Straw's partly Jewish
so we're not that bad.

His hair looked full and he didn't smile hardly at all, and his messianic
quality is more appealing than his overuse of the word community and
responsibility which make me feel like burning a few cars and writing on
walls.

A selection from the London Art Scene now (September 2001)

        Luc Tuymans at White Cube 2 Hoxton Square until 13 October

Tuymans has followed me from Venice to Hoxton. Acclaimed everywhere as a
very good contemporary painter, the world marvels at his understated images.
They are tasteful and twee. His subtlety is mere awkwardness, his surfaces
reflections of overhyped talent repeating itself. All boring people love
pictures they can recognize as having subject matter as long as it isn't too
clear what it is. Go to the Mayor gallery, Cork Street, there is a Magritte
watercolour selling for $250,000 dollars. Will Tuymans reach such heady
figures for his sketches, possibly and  Watteau will be crying softly in
heaven.

        Jan Bock at Sadie Coles Heddon Street

 Silly serious ironic clothes. Bocking Booring.

        Jim Shaw at Emily Tsingou Charles the Second street

 Dumbo adolescent themes dun in teenage style. Mad Magazine, breasts, funny
creatures. They will never reach $50,000 dollars. I fear they may be a bad
investment.

        Tom Chamberlain at Percy Miller Gallery nr London Bridge

 Tom's surfaces entice you because they mess with your eyes. To infinity and
beyond!

        Ian Kiaer at Asprey Jacques Clifford Street until October 20

 Various things aiming for self-controlled beauty.

        Group show at Stephen Friedman near Cork Street

The usual suspects rounded up for not unpleasant exhib. Figurative painting
makes me feel sick sometimes. It seems so crude and obvious. Abstract is
better because you can't see what it isn't.

        Burger King Two for One Offer

Two pounds for two biggish burgers! For those squeamish about spongiform,
the chicken flamers seem to be out of service wherever I go. They are
prepared to give you a tasty chick. alternative though.
