Suddenly the air is cold and the light dark, thoughts of emigration spring
to mind. Walking along a suburban street at 6 o'clock you know school has
started and Christmas with all it's bleak hopelessness will be heavy upon
you soon. No escape from jobs and commitments, the languor and sensual
freedom of moist summers ceases. Time to eat potatoes shooting off in the
bottom of the cupboard, time to be too hot on the tube, and too cold on the
streets. These early nights and miserable seasons are the work of the devil,
designed to promote rigorous puritanical capitalism, and extinguish
revolution through despair.(9C)

Autumn in London by Ben

Someone told me recently that Britain, as in island, has the light of
islands even far from the sea. In autumn this is clearly true, and on a
bright morning the clouds hover, lit from all around. It is a time to be
alive to leave hibernation and the daunting efforts of summer. The smells
are stronger earthy and rich, your sight is sharper and colours are
brighter, the sounds of birds and traffic pierce the colder air acutely. The
rain comes down and London is never better. You know that one day soon
you'll be wrapped up warm on the top deck of a doubledecker bus as it turns
onto Kensington High Street, and the road will be wet, there'll be a whiff
of snow in the air, a fug inside, and the black tarmac and shop lights will
sparkle.
